Juvenile diabetes mellitus masquerading as disseminated candidiasis.

چکیده
Junvenile diabetes mellitus may present acutely as diabetic ketoacidosis or with a chronic history of polyuria, polydipsia and polyphagia. Uncommon presentations include unexplained fever and weight loss, abdominal pain and secondary enuresis. Pyogenic skin infections and monilial vaginitis in teenage girls and adults may be present at the time of diagnosis but are rarely the sole presenting feature(l,2). We present a case of diabetes mellitus in a ten year old boy who presented to us with candidiasis of the oropharynx, mucocutaneous junctions and urinary tract.

An Overview of Candiduria
Candida microorganisms frequently exist as saprophytes on the external genitalia or urethra, however, yeast in measurable quantities are found in <1% of clean voided urine specimens. The overall frequency of Candida infections in hospitals has increased by 200% to 300% in the last decade, such that in a general hospital 5% of urine cultures may yield Candida species, and in tertiary-care center...
متن کاملUse of green fluorescent protein and reverse transcription-PCR to monitor Candida albicans agglutinin-like sequence gene expression in a murine model of disseminated candidiasis.
Candida albicans PALS-green fluorescent protein (GFP) reporter strains were inoculated into mice in a disseminated candidiasis model, and GFP production was monitored by immunohistochemistry and reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR). GFP production from the ALS1 and ALS3 promoters was detected immunohistochemically. ALS1, ALS2, ALS3, ALS4, and ALS9 transcription was detected by RT-PCR, further ide...
متن کاملGrowth Hormone Deficiency, Short Stature, and Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis in a Patient with Autoimmune Polyglandular Syndrome Type 1: Case Report and Brief Review of the Literature
Autoimmune polyglandular syndromes (APSs) include a cluster of autoimmune and nonautoimmune conditions which have been classified into subtypes. APSs type 1 is characterized by at least two of the following: chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis, chronic hypoparathyroidism, and autoimmune Addison's disease (AD). We report the chronological history of a female patient who presented with features mos...

متن کاملIn vitro lymphoproliferative response and cytokine production in mice with experimental disseminated candidiasis
Objective(s): Systemic candidiasis is an infection of Candida albicans (C. albicans) causing disseminated disease and sepsis, invariably when host defenses are compromised. We investigated the histopathological changes as well as the lymphoproliferative responses and cytokine production of splenic cells after stimulation with Concanavalin A (Con A) and Pokeweed mitogen (PWM) in mice with dissem...
